Private Forbes Millar, 7th/8th ( Service ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was a Battalion signaller and was killed in action in France, aged 30, on the 23rd July 1918. He had been born in Leith to Helen and the late John Millar of Hawthornsyde Cottage, Newstead, Melrose and is commemorated on the Soissons War Memorial, Aisne, France. Before enlisting he had worked with Messrs Freer and Muir, Solicitors in Edinburgh. He fell in the attack over open ground between Buzancy and Rosieres. However the artillery barrage was ineffectual and the advance came to nothing with heavy casualties. 4 Officers and 32 Other Ranks were killed and 7 Officers and 214 Other Ranks were wounded. In addition 63 Other Ranks were posted missing ( killed ).
