Lance Corporal William Brown

Lance Corporal William Syme Brown, 4th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in Holland on 1st November 1944 aged 42. He had been born in Currie to William and Anne Brown of Cemetery Lodge, Melrose and the husband of Janet Brown of Melrose. He is buried in Bergen-Op-Zoom War Cemetery, Holland. Before enlisting he had worked as a gardener in Devon. He fell in the fighting to clear the German defences from the island of Walcheren to enable the port of Antwerp to be cleared for Allied shipping ( Operation Infatuate ). For the period 1st -11th November the Battalion suffered 75 casualties of whom 10 were fatal. His Headstone is inscribed ” Always In Our Thoughts”. The photos show the Borderers in Holland in 1944.
