Corporal Robert Smith Riddell, 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in France, aged 35, on 1st July 1917 and is buried in Roclincourt Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of William and Margaret Riddell of East Port Melrose and the brother of Edward above. He had been working as a grocer in Melrose when he enlisted and was married to Catherine Riddell of Church Place, Melrose. At that time the Battalion were consolidating front line trenches near Oppy wood which had been captured on 28th June by units of X11 Corps.
