Private David Fairbairn, 2nd/6th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. He was killed in action in Belgium on 9th October 1917 during the Battle of Third Ypres and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. He had been born in Lowick and was the husband of Mary Fairbairn. The photographs show the desolation of the Flanders battlefields where the incessant shelling had destroyed the drainage systems.
