Private James Hope 28th Company, Machine Gun Corps. He was killed in action, aged 26, on the 16th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He had been born in Eckford and was the son of Robert and the late Elizabeth Hope of Hermiston Farm, Lilliesleaf. He was resident in Lilliesleaf when he enlisted in the 6th Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers and landed in France in May 1915. The 28th M.G.C. was formed in January 1916 and Private Hope, as a Battalion machine gunner was transferred into that Unit. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France and the photos show machine gunners in action on the Somme. ( His brother Thomas also fell – see above ).
