Lance Corporal Francis Kerr

Lance Corporal Francis Kerr, ” C ” Coy. 1st/4th Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died of dysentery aboard R.M.S. “Aquitania”, aged 31, on 20th October 1915, and was buried at sea. He was the son of Andrew and Agnes Kerr of Hawthorn Cottage, Lilliesleaf and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. The “Aquitania” had been commandeered by the Admiralty for use as a Hospital Ship during the Dardanelles Campaign. He had been born in Ancrum and was the son of Andrew and Agnes Kerr of Hawthorn Cottage, Lilliesleaf. Before enlisting in October 1914 he had been employed as a drapers assistant.
