Private William Keir Little, 1st/13th Battalion, London Regiment ( The Kensingtons ). He was killed in action in France on 5th October 1916, aged 37, during the Battle of the Somme. He had been born in Castleton and was the son of William and Jane Little of Carlisle and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Somme, France. He was living in Battersea, London when he enlisted. The autumn rains turned the ground into a glutinous quagmire which made all movement very difficult as can be seen from the photographs. The colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today with ” no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now”.
