Private Robert Gibson

Private Robert Gibson, 17th Battalion, Australian Infantry. He was killed in action in France on 31st August 1918, aged 33 during the ” Advance to Victory “. He was the son of James and Grace Gibson of Branxholm Park Cottages, Hawick and had been born at Larriston, Newcastleton. He is buried in Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension, Peronne, Somme, France. He had emigrated to Australia in 1908 and was working as a labourer in new South Wales when he enlisted in March 1916.  He had been wounded in May 1917 and again in July 1917. He fell in the capture of Peronne by the Australian Division. His Headstone is inscribed ” In Memory Of The Dearly Beloved Son Of Mr. & Mrs. Gibson Hawick “. The photographs and illustrations show Allied troops pressing against the retreating German army during the final 100 days of the War.
