Sergeant John Forrester M.M., 6th ( Service ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died in Belgium, aged 24, during the ” Advance to Victory” on 2nd October 1918 from wounds received in action and is buried in Potijze Chateau Lawn Cemetery, Flanders, Belgium. He had been born in Brampton and was the son of Robert and Isabella Forrester of Castleton. He was living in Newcastleton when he enlisted in May 1915 joining the 1st Battalion at Gallipoli in September 1915. Later he was promoted Sergeant and transferred to the 6th Battalion. with whom he was awarded the Military Medal. It seems possible that he was wounded in the attack on the fortified village of Ledeghem. The photographs show Allied troops advancing after the retreating German Army during the final 100 days of the War.
