Private John Elliot

Private John Elliot, ” B ” Coy., 10th ( Service ) Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. He died in France on 29th April 1918, aged 22, from wounds suffered during the German Spring Offensive on the River Lys. He was the son of James A. Elliot  the Postmaster, of 1 Langholm Street, Newcastleton and is buried in Pont-Du-Hem Military Cemetery, La Gorgue, Nord, France where his Headstone is inscribed ” God Is Love”. Before enlisting he had been employed as a post runner.  He had originally enlisted in the 4th Kings Own Scottish Borderers in November 1914 but was posted to the South Lancashire Regiment in France and from there transferred to the Cheshire Regiment. The photographs show Allied troops preparing to resist the German advances.
