Private John Davidson, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action, aged 26, at Gallipoli on 4th June 1915 and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. He was the son of Mr John Davidson of 2 Laing Terrace, Hawick. He was a Regular Soldier and had served seven years four of them in India with his Battalion which was part of the 29th Division. He fell during the Third Battle of Krithia which had been planned as a general attack to cut the Peninsula in two. .The attack, despite bombardments from the Pre Dreadnoughts ” Vengeance” and ” Swiftsure “,along 4,000 yards of Front failed with heavy casualties although the Battalion did capture one Turkish trench. The first photograph shows H.M.S. “Swiftsure” and the second the Battalion going over the top that morning.
