Fusilier James Phorson Smith, 9th Battalion, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. He died in Thailand whilst a Prisoner of War of the Japanese on 30th June 1943, aged 27. He was the son of Robert and Margaret Smith of Coxhoe, Co. Durham and is commemorated on the Kanchanburi War Cemetery, Thailand. He was captured at the fall of Singapore in February 1942 and was forced to work on the notorious Burma-Siam Railway. He was the brother of Robert Smith above.
