Private William Galloway, 46th Battalion ( South Saskatchewan ) Canadian Infantry. He died in France on 29th April 1917 of wounds received in action during the Battle of Arras, aged 38 and is buried in Bruay Communal Cemetery Extension, near Bethune, France. He was the son of Frederick and Jessie Galloway of Kelso and had been born at Pleasants Schoolhouse, Jedburgh. This Battalion fought in all the major Canadian Corps actions and because of its high casualty rates it was known as the ” suicide battalion “. His Headstone is inscribed ” The Eternal God Is Thy Refuge And Underneath are The Everlasting Arms”. The photograph shows Canadians going over the top at Arras.
