Private Walter David Mair, 1st/4th ( Queen’s Edinburgh Rifles ) Battalion, Royal Scots. He died at Gallipoli on 15th July 1915, aged 29, of wounds received on 12th July during the fighting at Achi Baba Nullah. He was the only son of Jessie Leishman Mair of 43 Slateford Road, Edinburgh and is buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. He had been educated at West Ham School and had studied at Edinburgh University from 1906-1911 before graduating M.A. in 1911 He then took up a career in teaching at Kelso High School. Whilst in Kelso he was very interested in Rugby Football. His Headstone is inscribed ” Greater Love Hath No Man Than This”. The photograph shows Achi Baba marked with a cross. This “hill” dominated the battlefield and was never captured. The second photo shows the Borderers ” going over the top” at Gallipoli and the third shows the Battlefield in 1922.
