Private Peter Reid, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action at Gallipoli, aged 23, during the diversionary landing at ” Y ” Beach and the subsequent fighting for the beachead and clifftop and is buried in Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. He was a Regular Soldier having enlisted in 1909 serving in India for five years. He had been born in Melrose and was the son of Helen and the late Patrick of Sunlawshill, Roxburghshire. The Battalion was part of the 29th Division which was solely comprised of Regular Battalions. Despite covering fire from the Pre Dreadnought battleship H.M.S.” Goliath” the Battalion was evacuated after only a few days having suffered over 200 casualties and sent farther south to reinforce the main landings at Cape Helles.
