Private John Huggan Patterson, 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on the 17th June 1917, aged 22 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. He hads been born in Bonkyl, Berwickshire and was the son of John and Christina Patterson of Windywalls, Kelso. He was the husband of Bathia Patterson of Torry, Aberdeen. He had been employed as a platelayer on the railways before enlisting as a Regular soldier in August 1914. He fell at the end of the Battle of Arras in the fighting around ” Infantry Hill” where attack followed counter attack. The cost was 6 Officers and 64 Other Ranks killed and 4 Officers and 158 Other Ranks wounded.. In addition 27 Other Ranks were posted missing.
