Lance Corporal John McKenzie

Lance Corporal John McKenzie, ‘D’ Company 17th ( Service ) Battalion, Manchester Regiment. He was killed in action on 22nd March, 1918, aged 26, on the second day of the German March Offensive ( Operation Michael ). He fell in the successful defence of the villages of Savy and Roupy and is buried in Savy Cemetery France. He was the son of Peter and Marion McKenzie and husband of Ethel Pickston McKenzie, Bowmont Street, Kelso. His Headstone is inscribed ” Peace, Peace! He Is Not Dead”. The photographs show Allied troops preparing to resist the advancing Germans.
