Private John Hogarth

Private John A. Hogarth, 12th ( Service ) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry ( City of Glasgow Regiment ). He was killed in action in France on 9th April 1917 on the opening day of the Battle of Arras, aged 26. He was the son of Andrew and Isobel Hogarth of Makerstoun, Kelso and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. This action was known as the First Battle of the Scarpe and was great success initially before turning into yet another grinding stalemate. The photographs show British troops and a “friend” in the main street of a captured village near Arras.
