Gunner Ian Stuart Smith, 38th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He died in France on 1st July 1918, aged 23, of wounds received in action and is buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France. His Headstone is inscribed ” Of Estate Duty Office Edinburgh His Life For Ours Until We Meet”. He was the son of William and Jessie Smith of 11 Woodmarket, Kelso and before the War he had worked in the Estate Duty Office in Edinburgh. The heavy batteries usually used the 60 pounder gun to demolish trenches, supply dumps and transport links behind the lines.
