Private George Tice, 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in Belgium, aged 29, on 26th September 1917 during the The Battle of Third Ypres and is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, Flanders, France. He had been born in Yetholm and was the son of George and Sarah Tice of Yetholm. He was a Battalion signaller and fell in an attack in the Hill 40 sector where poor communications and misty conditions caused the assault to fail with very heavy casualties. 4 Officers and 111 Other Ranks were killed and 6 Officers and 278 Other Ranks were wounded. ( Almost 50% of the attacking force). The photographs show the atrocious conditions of the battlefield where the incessant shelling had destroyed the fragile Flanders drainage systems.
