Private Archibald George Steel, 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards. He was killed in action in France on 25th November 1917 during the Battle of Cambrai, aged 19. He was the son of James and Agnes Beattie Steel of 47 Roxburgh Street, Kelso and is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louveral, France. He fell in the fierce fighting that took place in Bourlon Wood and which cost the Battalion 2 Officers and 23 Other Ranks killed and 2 Officers and 65 Other Ranks wounded. This Battle show the first use of massed tanks ( 437 ) on good ground and in the short term was a great success enabling the infantry to follow great breaches in the German lines.
