Private David Hope

Private David Hope, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died from wounds at sea, aged 19, on the 21st July 1915 and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey. He had been born in Jedburgh and was the son of David and Isabella Hope of 3 Richmond Row, Jedburgh. He had been employed on the Hartrigge Estate, Jedburgh and was a Territorial with the 4th K.O.S.B. He had landed on Gallipoli with the Battalion as part of the 52nd ( Lowland ) Division and was wounded during the ” Charge” on the Turkish trenches at Achi Baba Nullah on the 12th July. He died from leg wounds aboard a hospital ship and was buried at sea. The photo shows the Borderers going ” over the top” at Gallipoli.
