Private John Cunningham

Private John Cunningham, 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in France, aged 25, during the Battle of Arras on 15th May 1917 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras France. He had been born in Fashiebridge, Mid Lothian and was the son of Thomas and Jane Cunningham of Gorebridge and the husband of Jean Cunningham of Renton Barns, Grantshouse.  Before enlisting he had been a gardener in Edinburgh. The Battalion were holding front line trenches near Oppy Wood and suffered 30 casualties during this time from intermittent shellfire and sniping.  The photos show troops during the Battle and Oppy Wood after the fighting.
