Deck Hand James Markwell

Deck Hand James Markwell, Royal Naval Reserve. He was lost at sea aboard H. M. Trawler ” Holdene ” on 2nd February 1917, aged 48. He was the son of David Markwell of Holy Island and the husband of Rachel Markwell of West End, Holy Island and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.  The ” Holdene ” was a former Fleetwood trawler of 274 tons requisitioned by the Admiralty as a minesweeper and was commanded by Lieutenant Richard Walsh R.N.R. She was based at Harwich and was preparing to carry out a sweep off Orfordness when she struck a mine and sank immediately. Seven men were lost.
