Private William Redpath

Private William Redpath, 1st/4th ( Territorial ) Battalion  ( Queen’s Edinburgh Rifles ) Royal Scots. He was killed in action on Gallipoli, aged 28, on 28th June 1915. He had been born in Greenlaw and was the son of William and Agnes Redpath of Crumrigg, Greenlaw and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.  He had been employed as a clerk in Edinburgh when he enlisted in August 1914.  His Battalion was part of the 52nd ( Lowland ) Division and landed on Gallipoli in June 1915. He fell during the Third Battle of Krithia in the attack on a series of  Turkish positions at Fir Tree Spur. The positions were captured but at a heavy cost. 15 Officers including the C.O. Lt Col. S. R. Dunn and 204 Other Ranks were killed and 6 Officers and 141 Other Ranks were wounded. In no mans land the dry scrub caught fire and many of the wounded perished who otherwise might have survived. He is also commemorated on the Gordon War Memorial. The photographs show British troops in action during the Battle.
