Private Thomas Begbie

Private Thomas Begbie 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots. He died on Service in Hong Kong on 8th November 1940 aged 22. He was a Regular soldier and had been born in Gordon and was the son of Thomas and Jane Begbie of Station Road, Gordon and the husband of Davina Begbie of Bo’ness, West Lothian. He is buried in Hong Kong Cemetery, China where his Headstone is inscribed ” God’s Greatest Gift ,Remembrance “. At that time the Battalion was stationed in Hong Kong as a defence against perceived Japanese threats. These threats materialised on 8th December 1941 when the Japanese invaded and captured the Colony. The survivors of the Royal Scots then went into a brutal captivity until August 1945.
