Private John Mallen, 2nd Battalion ,Scots Guards. He was killed in France on 12th March 1917 aged 37. He had been born at Rumbleton, Berwickshire and was the son of John and Margaret Mallen of Gordon. He is buried in Sailly-Saillisel British Cemetery, France. He had served his apprenticeship as a grocer in Greenlaw before moving to Edinburg then Glasgow where he spent 14 years with Cooper & Co. On that date 2nd Scots Guards were relieved in the trenches near Sailly-Saillisel by 2nd Coldstream Guards and some losses were suffered from German shelling including Captain H. B. Clarke R.A.M.C. who was killed on the duckboards on his way out of the trenches.
