Sergeant George Brown Henderson, 7th/8th (Service) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died from wounds in France, aged 28, on the 17th April 1917 during the Battle of Arras. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of Robert and Marion Henderson of 87 Channel Street, Galashiels. He was a well known local athlete and was secretary of the Gala Harriers Club. He enlisted in June 1915 and joined the 8th Battalion in France in December 1915. It is likely he had been wounded in the attack and capture of the village of Monchy on the 11th April. Casualties were considerable from the retaliatory German shelling. He is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Extension, Rouen, France. The first photo shows an artillery piece captured by the Battalion during the Battle. After the War it was put on display outside Hawick museum.
