Second Lieutenant Robert Gordon

Second Lieutenant Robert Gordon, 99th Company, Machine Gun Corps. He died from wounds in France, aged 32, on the 4th December 1916 and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of Robert and Jeannie Gordon of “Ryefield”,Galashiels. He had been employed in his father’s tweed manufacturing business in Galashiels before enlisting in the 9th (Highland) Battalion, Royal Scots as a Private. He joined the Battalion in France in May 1915 before being commissioned into the Gordon Highlanders in June 1915 before being posted to the M.G.C.. The M.G.C. used the Vickers Mk.11 water cooled gun in both defensive and offensive roles. His Headstone is inscribed ” Son Of Robert Gordon, Manufacturer, Galashiels, He Died For His Country”.
