Reverend Pierce Egan, R.A. CH.D.

Reverend Pierce John Egan, R.A., CH.D, Chaplain 4th Class Army Chaplains Department Attd. 1st Battalion British West Indies Regiment. He died on Active Service in Egypt, aged 56, on the 6th April 1916 and is buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt. He had been born in County Clare, Ireland and was the husband of Jessie Egan of The Rectory, Galashiels. He had become Rector of St Peter’s Episcopal Church in Galashiels in 1913 after spells in Derry and Edinburgh and in 1915 he had offered his services as a Military Chaplain in June 1915. He went to Egypt in February 1916 but contracted dysentery and died in hospital in Alexandria.
