Private William Hislop, 1st Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 24, on the 25th April 1915 during the Second Battle of Ypres. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of Gideon and Jessie Hislop of Dumbiedykes Road, Edinburgh. He had been a millworker but had enlisted in the 2nd Battalion Royal Scots as a Regular in September 1910 and served in India after being posted to the 1st Battalion. The Battalion returned to England in November 1914 and went to France in December 1914. On the 25th April the Battalion were holding front line trenches near Ypres and suffered casualties from severe shelling. The photos show troops near Ypres during the Fighting.
