Private Robert Milne Hope. 2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action in France, aged 39, on the 25th March 1918 during the German Spring Offensive which had begun on the 21st March. He had been born in Kelso and was the son of the late George and Margaret Hope of Galashiels and the husband of Alice Hope of 111 Broughton Road, Edinburgh. He had been working as a despatch clerk in Edinburgh when he enlisted in the Royal Scots Fusiliers before being posted to the H.L.I. in France. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. The photos show troops in defensive positions awaiting the German onslaught.
