Private Patrick Kiernan, 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died from wounds in Belgium, aged 39, on the 5th May 1915 and is buried in Poperinghe Old Military Cemetery, Flanders, Belgium. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of the late Patrick and Mary Kiernan of Edinburgh and the husband of Mary Kiernan of 32 Wilderhaugh, Galashiels. He had been a Regular soldier and landed with the Battalion in France in August 1914. The Battalion was heavily involved in the Second Battle of Ypres especial at Hill 60 and he may have been wounded there. The artist’s impression tries to depict the fighting at Hill 60.
