Private Matthew Finlayson Haldane, 7th (Service) Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. He was killed in action in France, aged 25 on the 25th September 1915 on the first day of the Battle of Loos. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of William and Mary Haldane of 5 Sciennes, Edinburgh. He had enlisted in Edinburgh and landed in France in July 1915. He fell in the 15th (Scottish) Division attack which captured the village of Loos and advanced up Hill 70 in fine style. Unfortunately the attack lost cohesion here and a majority of the attackers went to the wrong objective causing more confusion. Casualties were heavy with 19 Officers and 668 Other Ranks in killed wounded and missing. The first photo shows Highlanders marching up to the front line at Loos and the second shows Loos after capture. The third shows Hill 70 looking over from the northern part of Loos. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France.
