Private James Lumsden Joss, 73rd Battalion ( Royal Highlanders of Canada) Canadian Infantry. He died from wounds in France, aged 30, in the 6th Casualty Clearing Station, Barlin and is buried in Barlin Communal Cemetery Extension, France. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of John and Elizabeth Joss of Almonte, Lanark, Ontario, Canada and the husband of Helen Joss of Almonte. The family had emigrated to Canada but by 1900 they were back in Galashiels although they went back to Canada in 1911. James had served his apprenticeship as a painter in Galashiels and was working in Montreal when he enlisted in November 1915 landing in France in August 1916.
