Private Hugh Knox, 15th (1st Glasgow) Service Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action in France, aged 40, on the 4th February 1917 and is buried in Varennes Military Cemetery, Somme, France. His Headstone is inscribed ” Though Lost To Sight To Memory Dear”. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of Christina and the late Edward Knox of 55 Channel Street, Galashiels and the husband of Margaret Knox of Newton on Ayr whom he had married in Galashiels in 1906. He had served his apprenticeship as a grocer with the Waverley Co-Op in Galashiels before becoming the branch manager in Newton on Ayr. Here he enlisted in the H.L.I. joining his Battalion in France in November 1916.
