Private George Fairbairn

Private George Wayness Fairbairn, 2nd (Eastern Ontario) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He died on Service in Germany, aged 24, on the 27th February 1917 whilst a Prisoner of War. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of Robert and Isabella Fairbairn of Wood Street, Galashiels. He had emigrated to Canada with his brother William in 1913 and was working as a groom when he enlisted landing in France in February 1915. Both were reported wounded and missing near Ypres in April 1915 but George had become a P.O.W. ( See below for William). He died of Peritonitis in the Johanniter Kraukenhaus in Stendal, Germany and is now buried in Berlin South-Western Cemetery, Germany.
