Private Edwin Haliburton, 2nd Regiment, South African Infantry. He died from wounds in Belgium, aged 17, on the 24th September 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres. He had been born in Melrose and was the son of William and Mary Haliburton of “Galahill”, Durban, South Africa. They had married in Galashiels before emigrating to South Africa. He had been employed as an outfitter and had enlisted underage in March 1917. He joined his Regiment in Belgium in June 1917. The photos show the atrocious conditions in Flanders where the incessant artillery fire had shattered the fragile drainage systems.
