Petty Officer William Clark Gray, Merchant Marine. He died in an accident, aged 21, in Rotterdam harbour when he fell from the main top mast into the cargo hold on the 1st March 1917. He had been born in Hawick and was the son of William and Jeannie Gray of Edinburgh. His father had operated an aerated water business in Channel Street, Galashiels for many years. and William was a well known local athlete, gymnast and boxer.
