Lance Corporal William Fowler

Lance Corporal William Buchan Fowler, 45th Battalion, Australian Infantry. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 40, on the 16th August 1917 during the third Battle of Ypres.. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of the late James and Mary Fowler of Galashiels and the husband of Janet Fowler of 137 Halliburton Place, Galashiels. He had served 12 years in the Gordon Highlanders and was working as an engineering fitter New South Wales when he enlisted in October 1914.He served at Gallipoli where he was wounded. After recovery he was posted to England in June 1916 landing in France in July 1917. The photos show troops in the early stages of the Battle.
