Lance Corporal Hugh Fraser Herbert, 17th (Service) Battalion, Manchester Regiment. He was killed in action in France, aged 23, on the 12th October 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of William and Christina Herbert of Roxburgh Street, Galashiels. He had been employed at the Buckholm Mill in Galashiels before moving to Manchester in July 1913. He enlisted there and landed with his Battalion in France in November 1915. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. The photos show troops on the Somme.
