Lance Corporal George Hendrie, 12th (Service) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action in France, aged 31, on the 21st May 1916 and is buried in Bois-Carre Military Cemetery. Haisnes, France. He had been born in Coatbridge and was the husband of Jeanie Hendrie of 260 Halliburton Place, Galashiels. Before enlisting he had been employed as a structural engineer at the Lochrin Ironworks, Coatbridge. He fell in the fighting near Hulluch and the “Kink” position which was much fought over. His Headstone is inscribed ” Worthy Of Everlasting Remembrance”.
