Gunner William Donald

Gunner William Donald, 42nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 23, on the 25th October 1914 during the First Battle of Ypres. He had been born in Perth and was the son of William and the late Ann Donald. He had worked at the Botany Mill in Galashiels and had been a member of the Volunteer Rifles before enlisting as a Regular soldier in the R.F.A. in 1908. His Brigade as part of the 3rd Division landed in France in August 1914. The R.F.A. used the 18 pounder field gun with either shrapnel or High Explosive shells.
