Gunner James Kivlichan

Gunner James Kivlichan, 246th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He died on Service in Mesopotamia, aged 38, on the 17th November 1918 and is buried in Baghdad ( North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of Isabella and the late Hugh Kivlichan of 24 St. John Street, Galashiels. He had been employed as a butcher in Dumbarton Co-Op when he enlisted in December 1915. He was posted to the R.G.A. in Mesopotamia in May 1917 but died from malaria in a Baghdad hospital. The R.G.A. used heavy howitzers such as the 9.2 piece pictured below.
