Private William Henry Dickson, 8th (Service) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action in France, aged 21, on the 23rd April 1917 during the Battle of Arras. He had been born in Inverness and was the son of John and the late Jane Dickson of 110 Halliburton Place, Galashiels. He had joined his Battalion in France in December 1915 and is buried in Guemappe British Cemetery, Wancourt, France. He fell in the attack on the German positions in and around the Village of Guemappe by the Battalion together with 9th Black Watch and 7th Cameron Highlanders which were stormed and captured although no further progress could be made due to the heavy machine gun and artillery fire. Casualties were heavy especially among the Officers. The photos show troops during the Battle.
