Private William Brownlee

Private William Mercer Brownlee, 8th (Service) Battalion, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He was killed in action in Italy, aged 26, on the 8th December1917 and is buried in Giavera British Cemetery, Arcade, Italy. He was born in Galashiels and was the son of Robert and Jessie Brownlee of 39 Woodside Place, Galashiels. He had originally enlisted in the 1st/5th Royal Scots in Edinburgh before being transferred to the K.O.Y.L.I. and going to Italy in November 1917. Whilst in the front line in the Montello sector he was killed whilst acting as a stretcher bearer.
