Private Robert Ballantyne

Private Robert Brunton Ballantyne, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in France, aged 19, on the 30th January 1917. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of William and Agnes Ballantyne of 63 Lintburn Street, Galashiels. Before enlisting in May 1916 he had been employed as an apprentice hairdresser in Bank Street, Gala. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. At this time the Battalion were in front line trenches opposite Le Transloy on the Somme and suffered 50 Other Rank casualties from shellfire.
