Private John Turnbull Alexander, 1st/4th (Queen’s Edinburgh Rifles) Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action, aged 24, in Palestine on the 19th April 1917 during the Second Battle of Gaza. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of John and Mary Alexander, Church Street, Galashiels. He fell in an attack near “Outpost Hill” which cost the Battalion 1 Officer and 13 Other Ranks killed and 6 Officers and 110 Other Ranks wounded. In addition 4 Other Ranks were posted missing. He is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
