Private James Philip Brownlee, 8th (Service) Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 26, on the 12th December 1915 and is buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm) Zillebeke, Flanders, Belgium. He was born in Leicester and was the son of Ellen and the late Adam Brownlee of Galashiels and the husband of Jane Brownlee of Galashiels. Before enlisting in October 1914 he had been employed as a slater. Originally he had enlisted in the 9th Battalion but in France he was posted to the 8th Battalion. He left his widow and four children.
