Private George Bell, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards He was killed in action in France, aged 24, on the 2nd July 1918. He had been born in Ashkirk and was the son of John and Helen Bell of 6 Nether Place, Galashiels and he is buried in St. Amand British Cemetery, France where his headstone is inscribed “In Memory Of Our Dear Son Galashiels”. He was killed in an aircraft attack which also wounded 3 others. Before enlisting in October 1915 he had been employed as a pattern weaver. ( His brother John also fell – see above).
